He was operating a travelling steam crane which was standing on a railway near the edge of the top of the quarry. The quarry was about 30 feet deep. A block of granite; weighing upwards of two tons, was suspended about one foot above the floor of the quarry by the steam crane, and was being pulled laterally to a new position by a hand crane which was fixed in the quarry, when the steam crane tilted and fell into the quarry. While it was toppling, he jumped from the crane carriage and, owing to the circular movement of the crane on its bed, dropped over the edge of the quarry.
