Details of Event
Four men were at work cleaning the sides of an inclined gate road which had an average dip for the full load of 1 in 8. For 20 to 30 yards up the gate an empty could be taken by hand, and, when full, lowered similarly with all the wheels lockered. Eight yards from the gate bottom there was a wooden door which the deceased attended to during the shift. The third full tub was being lowered by hand from a point 26 yards above the bottom of the incline, and deceased was made aware of this. When near to the door the two men let the tub go and followed it. When they reached the tub which had travelled on to the bend at foot of incline, the deceased was found with his left leg fast under the buffer and wheel. He was not able to give any account of how he got into the position. He died before reaching his home. The tub was probably travelling fast past the door and he, had clutched at the front corner with the object of steadying in it in the bend and fell in front of it.
