- Details of Event
- 21 January 1924: Shotts - Fatal Accident - On Monday morning a miner named Thomas Dearie, resident at Russell's Row, Fauldhouse, met with a fatal accident in Knowton Colliery, belonging to Messrs Barr & Thornton, Ltd. Dearie was proceeding to his work up an incline in the main haulage road when he was knocked down and pinned beneath a runaway hutch loaded with coal. When extricated he was found to be dead. The body was afterwards examined at the pit bottom by Dr S G Ogilvy, who certified death to be due to a fracture of the skull and other injuries. Dearie was 42 years of age and leaves a widow and five children, for whom much sympathy is felt. [Hamilton Advertiser 26 January 1924]
