- Details of Event
- About half an hour after deceased had started work and while he appears to have been sitting on his cracket kirving in a longwall place in the Five Quarter seam a large stone weighing about a ton fell from the roof close to the face and to the left side of the place upon him. He was soon relieved, as the deputy was close at hand but he never recovered consciousness. The coal was partially nipped out and a hitch bounded the place on the left side and deceased in working forward the coal had bared a small hitch in front. Above the stone was a glassy parting. The place had been examined by the deputy before deceased started work and it appeared safe. Deceased would have been wise if he had put up a prop or two (of which there was an ample supply close at hand) under the stone after he bared the hitch in front which was not visible when the deputy examined the place. The Local Inspectors considered the occurrence a pure accident. Buried at St. Mary Heworth.
