- Details of Event
- He was an experienced timberer and along with another man was re-timbering the roof of an old stone stenton 10ft wide to make it secure for a roadway. The place was 9.5ft high and they had set four balks which were left in at the ends as well as supported by props. They had practically finished their shift when the deceased ascended a ladder with the intention or pulling down a piece of stone. At the same moment another stone fell away from some rusty joints in the roof and canted out a safety prop. The heavier portion of the stone was beyond the safety prop and caught Dawson and fractured the base of his skull. The stone was known to be given a little but was not considered too bad to work under.
