- Details of Event
- He and his mate were lowering a full tub down aboard and locked all the wheels after lowering it about ten yards they reached a place where a chain passes around a prop to act as a brake and is usually attached to the tubs as the gradient below it is 1 in 5. On this occasion his mate was about to attach the chain to the tub when Ashton, who was in front of the tub called out that it was getting away his mate tried to hold it back but failed and the tub overpowered Ashton and crushed him against a standing tub and fractured his jaw and collar bone. An abscess was afterwards formed on the jaw and an operation was successfully performed on it at the Sheffield Infirmary on the 28th inst. but he never regained consciousness and died half an hour after the operation from suffocation due to vomited material.
