- Details of Event
- The accident occurred in a Thick coal gate road, which at the time was passing through an old opening which had filled with sand and marl from the overlying strata when the coal had been previously gotten; the bottom portion of the face consisted of pouncil which had heaved up. Deceased's mate had just drilled a hole in the pouncil, and deceased was working a little of the pouncil out, when a large fall of marl, sand and gravel, tightly consolidated into a ball about 3 feet diameter and weighing nearly two tons, burst out of the face and struck him. He was severely injured and died six days later. There was some "weight" on the road due to its approaching coal, but it was timbered closely and appeared quite safe.
