On account of the heavy gradient, 12 inches per yard, the empty was drawn up the stall and the full tram lowered by means of a chain passed round a sheave attached to a post near the face. While lowering a tram of coal the prop gave the tram ran away and the rapidly passing chain struck deceased. He died on the following day.
