- Details of Event
- Deceased was hewing alone next the fast side in a lift in broken workings in the Brockwell seam. Above the coal is 16 inches of ramble which the hewers take down across the tramway laid up the fast side, to make height. About 8 feet of ramble next the face was not taken down, and deceased was caught by a piece of it about 4 feet long and 2 feet wide. A small hitch ran along the place close to the fast side and bounded the stone at one end and next the face was an ordinary slip. The deputy had visited the deceased two hours before the accident and set a prop and plank within 3 feet of the face and the end of under the stone that fell. Inspectors reported that the occurrence, in their opinion was ‘a pure accident.’
