As he was going along a haulage plane with his horse for the purpose of hauling in some feed boxes to the stables, a journey of full trams ran back and killed him and his horse. The journey "bull" chain broke, causing the tram to run wild as the person in charge of it had omitted putting on the "back stay" iron.
