When deceased arrived at the shaft at the end of his shift he stopped at a chain fence stretched across the roadway. He afterwards passed the chain walked on to and stood on the sump planks until the cage descended on, and fatally crushed him. A collier standing near repeatedly called to him to come away as the cage was descending. The hitcher had gone up the pit. It looked very much like suicide.
