- Details of Event
- A new slant dipping 1 in 3 had been driven down 15 yards from the surface in alluvial ground parallel with and at the side of a sharply rising hill. The size of the opening was 8ft in height by 8ft. 4ins in width between the arms at the roof and 12ft. in width at the floor. Double timbers were set at intervals varying from 2ft 4ins to 3ft 1in apart. While three men were timbering at the face the soil gave way and buried them. One was got out alive, another died four hours after and the third was dead when found. The whole place in a line with the opening appeared to have slipped away from the surface in consequence of the heavy weight of the hill pressing. The weather, too, had been so very wet that the ground was much sodden with water. The timbering, however, should have been heavier, better bratticed, and set closer to each other. 2 killed.
