Deceased was at work on a ledge 4 feet wide with a vertical face 11 feet 6 inches in height, when a fall of ground extending for a length of 9 feet, 20 inches thick at the top, and nearly the whole height of vertical face, pushed him off the ledge. He fell 7 feet, his head striking an iron tub, and was killed instantly. The face had not been worked for three weeks and no satisfactory inspection of the part appeared to have been made before the workmen were allowed to commence work.
