- Details of Event
- A train of loaded waggons were being made up near this pit. Deceased had coupled 12 to the locomotive, using a coupling pole; he then went 25 yards nearer the pit to bring away two loaded waggons which were standing 5 feet apart. He lifted the brakes and they moved down this falling gradient of 1 in 72. He was seen walking between them. The last waggon moved fastest and closed up and deceased stood between the buffer and centre bar of the first. When the two waggons joined, this first moved forward quicker and again left a space end deceased was stopping out when it struck this last waggon of this train in front, rebounded and he was crushed. He was found clear of the waggons rolling on the ground in pain. He died as he was being taken to Newcastle Infirmary. His coupling pole was found after the accident resting against a building 10 yards from where his was caught.
