- Details of Event
- Crushed by a roadway journey of trams which was being lowered to the shaft from the summit of the engine plane, in consequence of the tail rope, by which it was being lowered breaking. The rope, which had only been at work five months, was worn to such an extent that although considered to have been originally of excessive strength, it was no longer strong enough for the load and the jerk it would have to bear on the journey being transferred from the main rope to the tail rope. The arrangements and conditions under which this rope works are so bad, that it must be the cause of a heavy charge for ropes, and the whole plan requires remodelling. (Mechanical haulage)
