Cuthbert was taking some stone down with a pick near goaf edge when a piece burst off near the top of the seam and fell on him injuring his spine and cutting his head. His mate (Havard) went to his assistance when another piece of stone fell away and caught and broke his thigh. Cuthbert died on the 16th inst.
