He came out of a return airway, with three others on to the engine plane. The set was running, so he told the others to stay in the stenton whilst he went to see where the set was. No sooner had he left the stenton than he was run over by the set and fatally injured. As he had three quarters of an hour in which to travel about three quarters of a mile out to the shaft, there was no need for him to have gone out of the stenton until he had seen the set pass. Had he waited a minute or two the would have been safe.
