Details of Event
Died November 28. Deceased had just commenced work in the fore shift and was sitting on his jacket kyrving in the top of the Yard seam, 2 feet 9 inches thick, in longwall workings in the 5th East way when a blue metal stone, about 7 feet long, 3 feet wide, and 7 inches thick, suddenly fell from the roof between the timber and coal face and fractured his right thigh. His marrow working on the other side of the gateway released him at once but in the meantime deceased had struggled to free himself and had thereby intensified his injuries, and although his leg was bandaged he lost a good deal of blood while being taken out-bye. He was taken to Newcastle Infirmary where he died. The deputy had examined the place 14 hours before the accident and before the hewers had started and he left it in his judgement safe. The stone did not in its fall displace any timber but fell between the last props and the face. There was a sufficient supply of loose timber convenient to the place available for use. The Local Inspectors reported ‘Consider it a pure accident and attach no blame to anyone.’
