He and another were driving a "side tie" on the hanging wall along the edge of a wide gunniss. During the shift, three shots had been fired and the men had returned to clear the ground, when that part of the hanging wall on which Curnow was standing fell away, precipitating him into the gunniss below, down which he fell 48 fathoms. After the fall it was seen that a slippery face formed the back of the ground which fell.
