He was holing in the bottom coal of the Arley Yard Seam, with sprags set about 4 feet 6 inches apart, when a portion of the top coal and dirt, measuring 8 feet long and 2 feet high and 1 foot 11 inches thick, fell upon him. The coal came away at a break with a smooth surface and displaced a sprag. The fireman, who had examined them previous to the accident, had considered the place well spragged and thought it was quite safe.
