He was making his inspection with two locked safety lamps when an explosion occurred. His lamps were found 68 feet in-bye from his body with a key beside them. There was no evidence to show what caused the explosion, but in his pockets, a pipe, tobacco, and part of a match were found. The safety lamps were in good order, and it is probable the gas extinguished them, and he struck a match to relight them
