- They were in the bottom dock of a cage which was being drawn to the surface when a pin in connection with the valve gear of one of the cylinders of the winding engine dropped out of its place, with the result that the motion of the engine was reversed and the cage was lowered down into 5.5 feet of water in the sump. The bottom deck of the cage being only some 4.5 feet high, and the shaft 5 feet in diameter, with little clearance at the ends of the cage, the men were drowned. 3 killed.
