The deceased and others had just finished moving the conveyor forward ready for the next shift of hewers, and he was just getting off the canch when a large fall of roof occurred, killing him instantly, and injuring another person. The master shifter was also under the stone, but fortunately it was prevented from getting right down by a tub. The portion which fell extended right across the gateway and had been carefully examined, but the stone having a maximum thickness of 2.5 feet, would give no indication that it was unsafe when jowled.
