- Details of Event
- Of 418 Whitehall Road, St George. William Minty of Lodge Hill, Fishponds said the deceased told him he had permission to leave his work early. The gates were not on the cage when Cox ascended because he was in such a hurry to get to the top and it would have meant sending to the surface for them. James Deaver of Chandos Road, St.George said "The cage was empty when it reached the top, so he started loading. Albert Bourne said he had given Cox permission to leave as he wanted to catch an excursion train. He later found the body in the sump or water pit at the bottom of the shaft. Cox had terrible head injuries. The Jury brought in a verdict of accidental death but said that in future cage gates should be kept at the bottom as well as the top. William Minty was later fined £4 for signalling the cage away before the gates were in place, though the magistrates said that he was deserving of sympathy.
