He presumably thinking he could get more coal down if he deepened the kirving, was wedging out a piece of bottom coal. Behind the coal he was wedging was a sooty back, and in consequence the coal came out mere easily than he had expected, and knocked out a sprag set to support the top coal, with the result that this top coal fell on to him, causing injuries which proved fatal.
