- Details of Event
- Died February 10, 1908. (MIR) (1907?) Deceased worked in broken workings in the West side district of the Yard seam in the Hastings pit. The seam is 2 feet 8 inches thick and he was engaged on a stock where only a few tubs of coal remained. He was kyrving in the top of the seam when a stone, about 6 feet long parallel to the face, 1 foot 3 inches wide at the bottom, tapering out to a point at the top, and 2 feet 4 inches deep, relieved by a lack parallel to the face, fell from the roof, close to the coal, upon him and fractured his spine. The deputy had been in the place about an hour before the accident. There was a sufficient supply of loose timber. The Local Inspectors examined the place on the day of the accident and reported, ‘Found it a pure accident without any negligence on the part of anyone.’
