Details of Event
A deputy instructed him to clean up the in-bye end of the endless rope in the North District of the Barnsley Seam assisted him to put one empty tub on to the full road and told him when he had filled it to lower it to some full ones round a curve. He was then to clean up the higher portion of the road and throw the scattered coal into any of 91 empty tubs which were standing on the empty road. On returning towards the end of the shift the deputy found him pinned between a prop at the road side and the front of the 84th empty tub with the seven below it off the rails and twisted completely around across both sets of rails. He was quite dead and cold. The empty tub on the full road had nothing in it but the man's shovel, and his lamp was hanging upon a prop close to him on the empty road side, and from this he appears to have done no work after the deputy left him. The most probable cause of the accident seems to be that he had been taking off one or more empty tubs attempting to fill them, and when he released the whole of the empty train moved forward, twisted round and caught him as he attempted to take his lamp off the prop. The train was kept in position by wooden lockers and the road dips 1 in 48 at the lower end and 1 in 12 higher up.
