- Details of Event
- The roof of the Eureka seam is sandstone rock with occasional smoothed vertical joints. The seam is 3 feet 3 inches in thickness. Two shots had been fired in the coal in front of the gate-road. Deceased had nearly completed filling the coal when a heavy block of rock, 9 feet by 3 feet 3 inches by 2 feet fell from between two rows of props and crushed his head to the ground. It broke, over a lid on the waste side, and from a vertical slip at the face side. One end of it was held up by a middle set, but deceased happened to be on his knees directly under the end that went to the ground. A depression of the roof had doubtless caused a slight opening at the vertical slip and permitted the stone to fall away.
