- Details of Event
- Off Shorts Rd. Mr Comley's duties were to Jig or brake the trams down the incline. James Hill Stephenson, the colliery underground man explained that the weight of the full trams brought up the empty ones. The speed of the trams was controlled by the brake in the Jig wheel. Mr Stephenson had examined the brake since and found it in good condition. In his opinion, Mr Comley had allowed the trams to run too quickly and then could not bring them to rest in time. At the pit there was a safety man hole. Mr E. Rowley, the inspector of mines said that when working the brake, the men usually stood in the manhole. They were instructed to do so. Samuel Hayman of Albert Rd, Hanham, pit deputy, said Mr Comley said to him after the accident "I couldn't get out of the way before the trams were on me." The gug continued to work after the accident. The verdict was accidental death and Mr F.R. Metcalfe, for the colliery expressed sympathy for the widow.
