No one witnessed this accident but it is supposed that he had dropped his whip and that in lean over to reach or he had overbalanced himself and had fallen off the limber. His head may in this way have been squeezed between a corner of the tub and a prop at the side of the road, and then his body pushed out of the way by the slowly moving tubs.
