He dropped his hammer from his working place just below the 222 fathoms level down to the 246 fathoms level, and went to regain it. On his way he slipped and fell to the 246 fathoms level, fracturing his skull. The road he travelled had been in use for several years and was provided with a hand-rail. He had not been sufficiently cautions.
