- 7 September 1934: Shotts Miner Killed - Patrick Close (36), coal machineman, 39 Rosehall Road, Shotts, was accidentally killed while at work in Baton Colliery Shotts, early yesterday morning by a fall of stone. Dr T. Mackinlay descended the pit and proceeded to the coal face to render assistance but Close was dead when extricated. As a mark of respect. The miners at the colliery remained idle for the day.
