- Details of Event
- This accident happened in the Slate seam. Holing is done in clunch, about 15 inches thick, which the web of coal sometimes over-rides. There is a double shift of coal winding. The previous shift had left some overhanging coal unspragged in contravention of Special Rule 77 The stallman in charge took the deceased and another holer to the place, and instructed them to set the necessary sprags, and then to go on with the holing. Instead of first setting the sprags, deceased began shovelling away the front of the clunch, when a large slab of coal fell away and killed him. It would have been better had the stallman himself rectified the breach of rule, or remained until the holers had done so.
