- 13 December 1918: Fatal Pit Accident - A miner named Robert Clephane, and residing at Overton Road, Kirkcaldy, met his death at Dundonald Colliery, Cardenden, on Friday morning. Clephane had just finished his work and was preparing to leave for the pit bottom, when some supports in the roof gave way and a quantity of debris fell on him. The quantity was not so great, but he was caught by the neck when knocked down and was killed instantaneously. What makes the case all the sadder is that he had been in France for 3 1/2 years and had only been back in the pit for four shifts when the accident happened. Deceased was 24 years of age and unmarried. [Dunfermline Journal 21 December 1918]
