- Details of Event
- Deceased and some others were filling a waggon on the lower floor of the quarry, where the face was 16 ft. in height, and slightly overhanging. Ten days previously a large quantity of rock had been blasted down and lay banked up against the face, forming an irregular Slope and thus supporting it. Nearly the whole of this loose rock had been filled away when the men heard a crack, and, on looking up, observed the face falling forward towards them. The others escaped but the deceased was knocked down and a large block weighing about 27 cwts rolled upon and killed him instantly. The mass of rock which fell was cut out by joints, and appeared to have been held in position only by a piece 3ft. broad and 15ins. deep near the top. The foreman had examined the top on the morning of the accident, and did not observe any cracks or other indications of danger.
