- Details of Event
- Died November 8. Accident in August. Clarkson was engaged in light work on the surface. For the part year he had been working very irregularly. In the early part or August, whilst clearing weeds from the tramway, the pick he was using struck a stone and glanced on to his foot. The injury was not mentioned to any official and he continued working for several weeks, walking to and from his work a couple of miles each way. He ceased working on August 25, and was subsequently admitted to the Whitehaven Workhouse Infirmary, where he died on November 8. An inquest was held at which the Medical Officer for the workhouse said that Clarkson when admitted was suffering from gangrene of the foot and this caused his death, He had a weak heart, and on account of that and his advanced age, it was not considered expedient to amputate the foot. The Jury returned a verdict that the ‘cause of death was gangrene of the left foot from injury by a pick.’ No notification of the inquest was sent by the Coroner on the ground that this was not an accident reportable under the Mines Act.
