- Details of Event
- He was returning to the quarry after dinner hour. He had descended an iron ladder of 29 staves, then took a few steps on a sloping ledge to descend a wooden ladder of 16 staves. The top of the ladder was below the level of his feet, and in bending forward to reach hold of the top he missed his hold and fell headlong on to some large stones and was killed instantly. It was raining and he had his coat slung loosely over his shoulders, tied at the buttonhole with string. This probably impeded the free rise of his arms in gaining a hand hold of the ladder. The ladder had only been placed in position during the morning and was too short to be reached with safety.
