Deceased was working at the coal face a few yards to the right of the gateway in the longwall workings in the Hutton seam the roof of which is short gray metal or shaly sandstone. A fall took place from the roof about 10pm. between him and the gateway and barred him. Every effort was made to get him out he frequently spoke to rescuers and liquid refreshment handed to him. Other falls came away and delayed progress and the body was not recovered till 7.30pm. on the 28th. The place had been properly inspected by officials and there were good supplies of timber. The Local Inspector ported 'We are of the opinion it was a pure accident and that everything had been done possible to man out.'.
