- 22 October 1917: Cambuslang – Explosion at Gateside Colliery – An explosion of firedamp took place on Monday afternoon in Gateside Colliery No 2, Cambuslang, which is owned by the Flemington Coal Company Ltd. Three men were at work in the virgin coal section when the explosion took place, causing a stoppage of work in the vicinity. Efforts were made to rescue the men with all speed. Dr Allison, Cambuslang attended. John Clark, who resided at Burnside Buildings Eastfield, Cambuslang, was found to be dead. He leaves a widow and two of a family. John McQuilliam, Causeyside Street, Tollcross, with a leg and arm fractured and suffering from gas poisoning, was removed to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in the Cambuslang ambulance waggon. Robert Kyle, 8 Bank Street, Cambuslang, injured on the head and body was removed home. [Hamilton Advertiser 27 October 1917]
