- The breakage of the haulage rope on the No.1 slope caused the journey to run wild and knock out timber, which resulted in a fall of roof, in the slope, extending over the manhole in which he had taken refuge. No explanation of the breakage was obtainable at the Inquest; the rope was said to have been working 6 or 7 months, and as it worked in wet on the roads presumably the wires had rusted and the rope was unable to bear the working strain any longer. This might perhaps have been classed under Haulage Accidents with justification.
