He and others were working on either the pit cage or the pit shaft and, in order to carry out the job, they had to remove the cage from the shaft. The cage was placed adjacent to the shaft but apparently was not secured for whilst the men were working it unexpectedly moved, hit Mr. Charlton, and knocked him into the pit shaft. He fell over 400 feet to his death.
