- Twenty eight men were descending. The reversing gear of the winding engine failed to act. The descending cage sped to the bottom and the ascending cage went upwards into the sheaves (which it broke) and then fell back down the pit onto the full cage. Five men in the upper deck were killed instantaneously. Those in the lower cage escaped with horrific injuries. Two died later in hospital. Of Edmundstown. 7 killed 14 injured.
