- Details of Event
- Deceased worked in a bord or whole place 10 feet wide, in the Benfield seam. The last pair of gears was 4 feet from the face.
A stone 7.5 feet long (across the place) 5 feet wide and 10 inches thick at extremes fell from the roof between the timber and the face projecting slightly over the coal and the plank. Its upper surface was concave and polished and in its centre was a caldron arse and coal pipes. It was certain to fall so soon as the coal was worked from under it. An inch or two of brat above the coal prevents fissures in the roof being readily detected. The deputy had been twice in the place that day before the accident. The Local Inspection reported that in their opinion the occurrence was purely accidental.
