- Information from the Mines Inspector's report - 1929: Explosion At Pennyvenie No.4 Colliery, Ayr, three men were at work in a part of the mine worked by electric cap lamps. The shot firer told the miners there was gas present and, some two hours later, one of the men produced matches and cigarettes, which he had concealed, and, though warned by his mate, he struck a match and ignited gas. All three men were burned, and two of them died.
