- Details of Event
- This accident occurred in the New Mine Clay in a heading 6ft. wide, from the right side and roof of which small quantities of water percolated, causing the strata to be rather soft and loose. Deceased was scotching a tub near the face of the heading, preparatory to filling it, and the pikeman was standing at the other end of tile tub, when suddenly a fall from the right side reeled out one or more of the trees, and four settings with a quantity of the roof dirt followed. Deceased was partially buried, and before the pikeman, who was fastened by the legs and slightly injured, could release himself and get assistance a second fall covered the deceased who was dead when got out. After the fall a slip was exposed along the right side of the place, and this with the presence of the water accounted for the collapse.
