- Details of Event
- Deceased and another were ripping down top coal in a jig 7 feet 6 inches wide, and securing the roof with bars 4 feet 6 inches apart resting on props at each end. The top coal had been taken down for a distance of 5 feet in advance of the last bar and deceased was squaring out the sides to get another bar in when about 30cwts. of hard fireclay fell from the roof, breaking his back. He succumbed on 27th March. The roof was full of slips and exceedingly treacherous. The bars were too wide apart considering the nature of the ground and the agent instructed the men to reduce the distance between to 3 feet.
