- Details of Event
- Deceased and another were bringing back a pillar in the thick coal. This opening was 18 feet long and 12 feet wide and within this area 9 props had been set each carrying a strong lid. The coal had been worked to a height of 7 feet 6 inches, excepting a small portion at one side where the height was 4 feet 6 inches. A shot had been fired in the lower portion, which brought down part of the coal and broke the remainder. Deceased was working this down with a lever when a quantity of the overlying coal came with it, thus giving the portion under which he stood a loose end. Part of it came away from a slip, reeled out two props and knocked him down. Before he could be extricated a second fall took place completely burying him. Deceased and his mate were reputed to be experienced and careful men. They set their own timber, and had a sufficient supply of spare props.
