- Details of Event
- Of Castleford. Lowering an empty tub, on rails, to the coal face. This was down a slope, estimated at 1 in 4, and they had used a rope to lower the tub part of the way, and then let it down by hand the remainder. They had a locker (a wood or iron rod stuck through the spokes to stop the wheel turning) in the wheels, and Turner was at the front with the other two holding the tub back. On entering the stall, the tub caught and dislodged a prop, causing the roof to fall on Smith and Andrews, crushing them to death.
