Details of Event
Along with another deputy he was just finishing drawing the timber from a jud (chocks and props), and whilst loosening the last prop with a mall, preparatory to knocking it out with a punch 8 feet long, a piece of stone 12 feet by 7 feet, and 6 inches at the thickest part, fell on to him. It was found after wards that a slip ran through this stone, and probably the prop and headtree were right on this slip. When the prop was knocked to one side, the stone at the other side of the slip would be liberated and then cant the prop out, thus letting down the stone. The man knew the stone was bad, and should either have allowed the prop to remain or have used the punch only in his efforts to get it out.
