- Details of Event
- He with others was working at the bottom of an open clay pit 24 feet by 24 feet by 35 feet deep. While he was crossing the winding chamber the bucket, containing water, suddenly descended and struck him on the head. The band brake had been greased on the rim "to prevent its squeaking." It was somewhat slack, and a chip of wood was occasionally placed under it to make it grip. The whim attendant affirmed that he had inserted a chip on this occasion but it had slipped out. Apparently he had permitted the bucket to acquire too much momentum and was unable to control it.
